LAST WEEKEND Of the exhibition -
“Nick Miller and the Studio of Edward McGuire” at
IMMA - Irish Museum of Modern Art in the Garden Galleries.

After 5 months Ending May 2nd.

It has been a really rewarding experience delving into the world of the painter Edward McGuire, and shining some light back on his work.

Here is a little film I made, a riff on his remarkable Colour Dictionary, (1958-68), part of the 2009 studio donation to the Collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Both the Dictionary and film are on show.

The film, is used in the installation of a selection of his studio contents to illustrate what can no longer be easily seen, as the dictionary is a fragile object that I had the privilege to examine and photograph. It goes through each page, and some detail and is set to the laid back jazz sounds of “Blue in Green” by the wonderful Bill Evans, Jazz piano player and composer extrodinaire (with Miles Davis during a really key period). Its a great track, on one of the Albums I found, that came with the studio contents. McGuire used to listen to him and a lot of Jazz, and 30 odd year later I did too while on residency at IMMA, painting some of the objects from his studio and some of the people he painted in the 1960’s and 70’s. The music helped animate the objects and McGuire for me, and the album covers became backdrops for much of the work.
