Portraiture and the painted encounter is a central tenet of Miller’s practice setting the parameters for all facets of his painting practice from landscape, to figure and still-life. Many portraits remain un-exhibited, part of a decades long evolving project.

Selected exhibited work includes: Nick Miller and the Studio of Edward McGuire a seminal drawing project CLOSER. Various watercolour projects including STANDING | SITTING | LYING and ON MEETING and a 2011 film Painting Patrick: After Venus & Olympia. He received the inaugural Hennessy Portrait Prize in 2014 at the National Gallery of Ireland.

A project at Point B, Brooklyn, New York in Oct/Nov 2012. Each day over 40 days Nick Miller invited people to sit in his Brooklyn studio: artists, writers, collectors, friends, strangers, whoever could be found for that day by arrangement or chance.
