Apertures & Anxieties: Artists celebrate 300 years of Trinity’s School of Medicine

From 2010-11 the school of medicine at Trinity College Dublin collaborated with the Royal Hibernian Academy. Eleven artists were invited to celebrate 300 years of the school by working closely with staff and students. Aideen Barry, Megan Eustace, Andrew Folan, Nick Miller, Ciaran Murphy, Maria McKinney, Theresa Nanigan, Abigail O’Brien, Eilis O’Connell, Garrett Phelan and Grace Weir spent time in departments ranging from anatomy to neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry and social medicine RHA Galleries I , II & III 18 November- 21st December 2011

For this exhibition Miller developed a body of work begun in an earlier period but completed through his 2 year association with the Medical School. Focused on the relationship between mind and matter. The exhibition includes three aspects: anatomy paintings of the brain; a sculptural installation and a series of paintings concerned with internal thoughts and brain function.

MIND: selected watercolours & ink paintings (2005-10)

Selected works in watercolour on indian handmade paper mounted on Aluminium composite all measuring 75 x 105 cm. These works started in the early 2000’s usually made in January each year they address internal mental observation directly, attempts observe the mind at work. They usually take a starting point with observational drawing in watercolour of found objects from nature, collected while walking prior to working. From there the route they take is determined by internal reflection and observation of thought, the resulting images are sometimes literal and sometimes not.. For further information see text

Absent Mind & Matter: sculpture & install

Absent: mind & matter (meeting with self) 1984-2011 Mixed media installation and video projection. 164 x 80 x 50 cm. Constructed from studio material (artist’s coat, stool and table & video projection) plus 26 years of artist notebooks. Each page was read, reviewed by the artist before being permanently glued together creating a solid matter version of the artist’s mind from 1984-2011. For further information see text
